Working With Young Adults

Young Adults

High school and college education provides academic training, but life demands much more! Jonathan helps people in their teens and 20s:

  • Sort out personal relationships, especially during the tough transitions from high school and into college and the working world.
  • Define new adult-to-adult roles and relationship skills with parents and other family members.
  • Make decisions about the taboo topics of life: sex, alcohol, marijuana & other drugs.
  • Figure out how to decide between “what I want to do” and “what I should do.”

Consultation to Parents

Many parents are frustrated with trying to understand their teen or young adult’s behavior. Why do you have to fight me on everything? How can you put yourself at risk like that? How can your behavior seem so irrational or uncaring? Jonathan helps parents and families by helping parents understand:

  • Is my teen or young adult’s behavior developmentally appropriate?
  • How risky is alcohol use? What about marijuana? What about other drugs?
  • What is the difference between “normal” moodiness or anger and all those diagnostic words (depression, bipolar, borderline, etc.)?
  • Why would my child make decisions that seem so wrong to me?

Jonathan offers parents:

  • Realistic education about drugs and alcohol.
  • Insight into what makes a decision seem sensible in the moment even if it looks bad in the big picture (or vice versa).
  • Feedback about how your parenting style may (or may not) help the situation.
  • Ideas about new parenting strategies.
  • Warmth and caring for parents, kids, and all the actors in a family system – avoiding scapegoating.

Contact Jonathan to discuss how a consultation could help you get “unstuck” as a parent and a family.
